A Southern Soul Sistah with and urban edge…

When asked who she was, she simply replied saying, “K Soul is a fusion of hip-hop, R&B and soul. The soul part more so comes from what I’ve been through, who I am and what’s in my heart.” K Soul takes what we all would like to expect coming from a soul artist but also takes what she has learned and turns it into positive energy that is fueled by her urban influences.

Her humble beginnings started when she was in grammar school. Her writing became her therapy and allowed her to go the growing pains coming up as a child. “I wasn’t raised by my parents, so dealing with that and trying to accept why I wasn’t around them was my way of dealing with my emotions.” Her progression in her writing and singing went throughout her high school years singing in choirs and recording when she was 19. “My sister’s boyfriend at the time had a home studio with a curtain and I went in and did it on cassette tape; the one when you press play and record at the same time –LOL.”

Some of her major influences include the likes of Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, Pattie Labelle and many others. Kay states, “I really like Beyoncé, even though I don’t sing her same type of music, I love her hustle.” You can still be just as good of a performer in your own right and still have many influences.” Her influences doesn’t just stop there, she also has a list of hip-hop artists that inspires her style and “swagger” as well including the likes of Jay Z, Kanye, Mos Def.

Her versatile sound is setting the tone for many up and coming neo-soul artists to keep their foot in the door of the music industry by staying current and relevant with the sound and also keeping an edgy twist for little surprises her and there. “Well I was born in the south originally and I’ve been in Chicago since I was about 4. Chicago is my city and I hate to see some of the negative things going on now with the violence and political issues so there is a part of me that feels like hopefully someway with my music I can put a positive light on the city. At the same time I’m realistic with this industry and if taking my career to the next level requires relocation, I am also open to do that as well.”

Although she is open to expand her brand to other regions, she still believes that there can be talent that comes from Chicago and still embrace the city as their hometown. “I think Chicago has the potential to be what Atlanta is to the music industry.” “Just how Ludacris and Monica and others stay together, make music together and promote each other. If we are able to stick with each other, we have to potential to break in this industry as well.”

Her latest single ‘Let Go’ (Reprise) is out on iTunes right now speaking about her personal experiences when she was in a place where she needed to heal from her music again. “The song is very emotional and I feel that it can relate to both men and women who have been heartbroken.” “ It’s not meant to be an ‘angry’ song but more of a resolve to say I’m okay and I can move on from there.”

Kay Soul is currently in the studio working on the release of her latest project set to release in November and also doing shows both locally and in other areas.

Featured on Big Sean’s new track produced by the legendary No I.D. Control (HOF) ft. Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica, the lyrical artist came out the gate running sending a serious message out not only one artist, but all current artists. He is not only just sending a message out his peers, but also killing the track with lines including him being the “King of New York” and many other mind blowing lyrics. I’d say that is a serious artist who is simply speaking his mind about the current events in his industry, nothing wrong with that. The 7-minute track opens up with Big Sean setting the table and hands it right over to Kendrick who sets the tone including lines with both Sean and Jay Electronica in the mist of his lyrical assassination. Now some may call it beef, but if you have a conscious, he is really calling out his peers to step their game up and not conform to what this industry has been accustomed to for the last 15-years.

With the track dropping late Monday evening, the twitter feeds have been burning with reactions from fans and other artists alike. Who knows, will this be the call that all artists needed to hear in order to step their game up? Let us know what you think!!! [CHICAGO] In order to see positive change, we MUST change how we are in tune with our youth instead of letting the fear, anger, or lack of concern get in the way. I believe that is it is a long time coming, but I also believe that if we ALL com together and reach out to our youth, and not just depend on our celebrities to do so, our youth will in turn do better and be able to express themselves without resulting to violence. Lets make a statement through our positive work and not let the guns speak for us any more!!!

Got Bars is a free 10-week program that is reaching out the the inner city youth ages 15-24 through Kanye’s non-profit program “Donda’s House” in conjunction with Chicago’s Rhymfest that will teach the youth about beat making and writing allowing them another outlet to express their thoughts. More information and applications will be available on Aug. 2. Make sure that you all Google this to see whats going on with this program!!!

With vocals that can ease a broken heart, musicianship of the likes of Stevie Wonder and Pharrell Williams, and the mind of some of the greatest artists of our time; Velous is what I like to call a true refresher to the industry. The 21–year-old artist has only been working on his career for a short time but has the mindset and artistry of those who have been in the game for decades. His debut release ‘Velocity’ is set to hit the masses in early August with and entire list of hot tracks including ‘Pretty Girls’ and ‘Larger Than Life’. He’s not only a singer/ songwriter; he also produces and raps as well. The one-man-band known as Velous is definitely a true artist and also a humble spirit as well.

His inspiration for the craft comes from various genres and artists (major and independent), but most importantly his vocal inspiration comes right from home. He has taken the necessary steps early on in career in order to build his brand and develop a style that is much needed. Being crowned MTVu’s Freshman of the week with his video ‘Pretty Girls’ feat. MMG’s Torch back in March, Velous is showing no signs of stopping now.

Is there anything that can stop this man? -I think not. Jay Z took his art to another level today performing his track ‘Picasso Baby’ for six straight hours at Pace Gallery in New York. Circled by press, fans, and even a celeb or two, Jay takes the small stage and create art right in front of their eyes.

With his not so happy views about the unsuccessful launch of the Samsung app for his new album Magna Carta: Holy Grail, Jay looked to take matters into his own hands once again and delivers an amazing performance with a few collabs from fans and other spectators. Social media users popped Instagram pics and Vine vids of Hov working the room as a visual display.

NIZM PIC

A wordsmith, a storyteller, a gentleman; just a few words that describes Chicago artist NIZM. With over 16 plus years in the industry, NIZM has developed a style of hip-hop that transforms the soul and with gritty drums being adorned by melodic tones and samples that takes you to the raw era of hip-hop, a more “golden time” if you will. His lyrics vary from topics of historic icons to contemporary issues that are currently happening in the streets. “I’m an artist that relates music through life,” states NIZM.

His inspiration for the historic hip-hop era came during his late teen years in conjunction with earlier influences from a varied collection of genres. NIZM states, “It’s always been like going back to where I was. When I first started out, you just did it for fun, it was the energy and the soul in the music that I think a lot of it lacks now.” His approach to his sound spans into younger generations, but is genuinely catered to the 25 and up crowd.

NIZM is partnered with his drummer and music director Tim Jones, and producer The Assassin in a group called Those Guys which showcases various tracks from his solo work and collaborations with his band members. The group has had several shows in the Chicago land area and is in the process of working on some new projects to be released soon. Catch up with NIZM on Facebook, Twitter, Band Camp, or in the words of the redefined gentleman himself,  “just Google me”.
